Questions for Charlotte
Why did you start writing?
I've been lucky enough to travel a lot in my life and travel definitely gets the imagination going. It took me long enough but one day I finally decided to start writing things down when inspiration struck.
How did you first get published?
I worked on the manuscript of my first novel for four years, going back to it, revising, at least a million times. (And I'm not exaggerating.) Then I searched around for an agent and found one who was enthusiastic about the story. She contacted Kate Duffy, editor at Kensington, who signed me up for a three-book contract.
Your plots have an historical hook. Why?
I like reading a story where the stakes are high, one where there's not only a personal but also a public dimension. I think Devon and Blackburn's dynamic is all the more intense because there's so much at risk – their own lives but also the future of England and Europe.
Do you play the piano?
Yes – badly.
What are you working on right now?
It's about a young widow whose personal freedom is at stake – and a powerful man battling his own private obsessions. That's all I know right now because I'm not quite sure exactly the kind of roller coaster ride these two will take me on. But trust me – it'll be intense.
